Ed Wakelam, character analytics, footballer analytics

Dr Ed Wakelam



Chief Executive and Founder of Habilitas, Ed built his skills through an outstanding 38 year career in the computer industry, specialising in professional services, software development programmes and solutions development.

He held a number of senior positions in three major corporations. Operations Director for Logica Australasia and Far East, Managing Director Application Services ICL/Fujitsu and VP Global Application Modernisation and Outsourcing Unisys.

Ed built a reputation for fixing failing businesses, returning them to profitability and growth and for fixing poorly functioning organisational structures and reducing costs.

He is now a University Research Fellow at the University of Hertfordshire focused upon the application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Techniques to deploy learning analytics and performance prediction in the field of Sporting performance. Ed has degrees in each of Computer Science and Mathematics and a PhD in the field of AI.

Ed has authored three peer reviewed journal papers and two conference papers published and presented at conferences, with 120 citations to his credit. His work is now focused upon how novel analytics may be created and deployed to reduce the spiralling investments clubs must now make in their recruitment of elite players.


Volker Steuber, character analytics, footballer analytics, machine learning

Professor Volker Steuber



Volker is a world leading expert in computational neuroscience (e.g. Rothman et al. 2009, Nature 457, 1015) and has served for four years as president of the Organization for Computational Neurosciences (2019-2022).

He is Head of the Biocomputation Research Group at the University of Hertfordshire. Research in the Biocomputation Group involves the development of computational models to study the brain and other biological systems and the application of data science and machine learning algorithms for the analysis of real-world data.

Before joining the University of Hertfordshire he worked as postdoc at UCL and the University of Antwerp. He received his PhD from the University of Edinburgh and has degrees in artificial intelligence from Edinburgh and in neuroscience from the ETH Zürich. Volker’s current and previous funding includes grants from the Human Frontier Science Program Organization, the German DFG, the BBSRC, Innovate UK and the German Academic Scholarship Foundation.

He is a member of the Centre of Data Innovation Research and the Centre for Future Societies Research at the University of Hertfordshire.


Yi Sun, character analytics, footballer analytics, machine learning

Dr Yi Sun



Yi has world class experience in the application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques and is one of the University of Hertfordshire’s leading experts in these fields. She has over 20 years extensive experience of working in the areas of applied machine learning and data visualisation.

Yi’s PhD research work was funded by Pfizer Central Research. She has over 70 peer reviewed publication with over 800 citations for her work.

Yi’s is a senior lecturer in the School of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire, her lecturing and tutoring experience includes Neural Networks and Machine Learning, Data Driven Systems and the Foundations of Computation.

For the past two academic years she has also led the extra curriculum projects Data Science subject group, including a component on footballer analytics.


James Wakelam, character analytics, footballer analytics, machine learning

Dr James Wakelam



James’s experience spans medical and surgery positions at major hospitals throughout the south east of England, including an elective posting to Mount Sinai Hospital, New York. He has outstanding anatomy and medical knowledge which resulted in his participation in national audits and training of junior doctors, including wining the Imperial College London, Ashford and St Peter’s Hospital Trust Local Teaching Hero award.

He has performed or assisted hundreds of operations spanning multiple specialities including Colorectal, Plastics, Breast, Neurosurgery, Upper GI, Sarcoma, ENT, Cardiothoracic, Urology and Vascular surgery at various levels.

Throughout his medical career James has maintained an interest and involvement in technology, starting from his first degree in Imaging, Surgery and Medical Sciences. James also has degrees in each of Medicine and Surgery.

To further this interest in analysis and decision making James developed his knowledge of AI and Machine Learning methods to support the increasing importance of these methods in medicine and its related fields.

James’s knowledge of sports and in particular football underpins our collaborative offerings, His communication skills are outstanding, developed throughout his medical career. He maintains a strong results-oriented focus essential to achieving results in time critical situations.

James is also responsible for our maintenance of the highest ethical standards in our management of player and club data.


Matt Jewiss, character analytics, footballer analytics, machine learning

Dr Matt Jewiss



Matt's research interests focus upon identifying those psychological variables which are associated with peak performance (e.g., challenge and threat states and anxiety) in performance settings such as sport, education and aviation. He is also interested in emotional regulation, predictors of performance and adherence (self-efficacy, self-confidence, motivation) and the efficacy of psychological skills training strategies.

Matt has published in the areas of cognitive psychology and leadership. He has five peer reviewed publications, with almost 40 citations to his credit.

Matt has collaborated with colleagues on a variety of research and consultancy projects at a range of HE institutions such as the University of Chichester and Kings College London.

Matt works as a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science (Sport Psychology), prior to which he was a Lecturer in Skill Acquisition.

Matt was awarded Fellowship of the HEA (FHEA) from the University of Chichester. He has a BSc and an MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology and a PhD in Challenge and Threat from the University of Chichester.
